Martin Luther King parade

Martin Luther King day was on the second day Mary Beth and I were in Honolulu. We didn’t realize as it’s not something we’re used to celebrating in Canada. We were actually headed to the Ala Moana shopping center when we saw large groups of people gathering. As it turned out we made perfect timing to catch the Martin Luther King parade. It was the second parade two days in a row in Honolulu.

Police patrol - SegwayOn our first day, there was the parade of champions for all the local sports teams. As Hawaii doesn’t have any pro teams in sports all the local teams take the spotlight. We were too excited to have escaped old man winter and lazed on Waikiki beach catching bits of the parade as it went by.

The Martin Luther King parade was pretty cool and very long. We both enjoyed it and it was nice to see a lot of Bush protest in the parade. I still fail to understand how such a tyrant could stay in office for so long in a democratic society. I suppose that’s part of the problem as democracy has taken a back seat during Bush’s “reign”. It was neat to see police patroling on segways, something I’ve never seen before.

Another interesting thing I found out during the parade was the choice of vehicles for police. For some reason a lot of them ride around in “pimped” out rides as their regular police vehicles.
