I had originally gone to the Five Guys Trainyard location on a Thursday evening around 7:00 PM and I didn’t even go inside after looking in and seeing the place was packed with no room to sit.  A few days later, on a Sunday we went to the Five Guys location on Hazeldean.  This time we went early showing up 10 minutes after opening.  Luckily we were the first ones there although by the time we had sat down people starting flowing in.  We ordered 1 regular order of Cajun style fries.  One regular hamburger fully loaded.  One little cheeseburger and one regular drink.  There is free refills on drinks!

There are no trays for eating in, everything comes packed in a paper bag, ostensibly this practice originates from when they were only a take-out place.  The grease starts soaking through the bag the almost the second they pack the food in it.  This is mostly due to the fact that they place the burgers and container of fries in the bag and then dump more fries over everything.  My advice if you’re planning on picking up take-out at Five Guys is bring a plastic bag with you to put your food in or else it could get a little messy in the car.  The Five Guys burgers come tightly wrapped in tin foil which is good.  Be prepared for some finger licking goodness but beware, it’s going to be messy!  The Cajun style fries are super tasty, no extra salt required.  I’ve never tried the regular fries but after having the Five Guys Cajun style fries I don’t think I would bother trying the regular ones.  The Five Guys regular burger has two patties whereas the little Five Guys burger only has one patty.  Our order for 2 burgers, 1 fry, 1 drink came to roughly $18 which is only slighter higher than a combo at decent fast food burger joints like A&W.  Seating is cafeteria style and thankfully the Five Guys Hazeldean location is a bit larger and doesn’t have tables crammed quite as close together as at the Trainyard.

If you’re looking to go for a burger in Ottawa that still qualifies as fast food but better and you don’t mind a bit of a messy burger than I definitely recommend Five Guys!

40 minutes came and went and at around an hour I called back to make sure our order hadn’t been forgotten or overlooked.  I was told that the driver was out with the pizza and it should arrive any minute.  It was another half hour before the pizza arrived just shy of being cold.  I then found out that they had marked method of payment as cash on the receipt and the driver hadn’t brought his debit machine with him.  He left the food and advised he’d be back in half an hour.

The driver finally arrived two and a half hours later at 10:30 PM at night with his debit machine.  To make matters worse it turned out the charge for debit on delivery was $1.50 not $1.00.  Obviously not a big deal but it just made it seem like no one seems to know what’s going on at Pizza Hut.

Overall it wasn’t a great experience and I probably won’t end up ordering from them again.  I’m not sure if this is common service for them but I would hope not.

The last hot air popcorn popper I had was a Rival.  It originally worked very well for about a year and then became quite unrivalled in the amount of popcorn it would send all over the counter and the floor.  This Rival hot air popper developed quite a nasty habit and other then the mess it made was actually quite funny to watch.  It would send kernels of popcorn that were on the verge of popping but hadn’t popped yet flying into the bowl of popped corn and then pop making the popcorn around it explode out of the bowl.  This would happen continuously until all the kernels were done popping leaving at least a full cup or more of popped popcorn strewn all about the kitchen like a popcorn war zone.  Needless to say I eventually tired of cleaning up the mess and sprung for a new popcorn maker.

I thought I would try something different and at the time had a gift certificate for The Bay.  I purchased a Beaumark hot oil popcorn maker and this is what I think of it.  First of all since oil is required and I also like to put melted butter on my popcorn it turns a somewhat healthy snack into a really not so healthy snack.

The hot oil causes the red paint to melt and transfer onto the edges of the bowl each time you make popcorn.  I imagine that this will continue to happen until there is no more red paint left to melt and transfer.  As you can see from the picture, on the top (actually the bottom) of the bowl there is a red lid.  You are supposed to pop the corn with the lid off and then place the lid on the bowl once it’s done popping.  It’s supposed to be a butter well with holes that will allow the butter to drip onto the popcorn.  The problem is that it doesn’t work very well at all and you will end up with un-melted butter and the butter that does melt will only end up coating the popcorn at the bottom of the bowl.  After 5 uses the lid stopped fitting to the bottom of the bowl.  The lid is made from a hard unflexible plastic and even when it was brand new it didn’t fit very well.  Every time you try to put the lid on it just pops right off. I have found that a regular margarine lid fits very nicely in its stead.

The Beaumark popper does pop corn very well with very little residual unpopped kernels and everything is contained without any mess.  On the other hand you do have to remove parts to clean after every use.  I’m not too impressed and would prefer a really good hot air popper that does it’s job well.  The choices are slim here in Canada.  If I want a really good hot air popper I’ll probably have to order one out of country just like a lot of other things.

I spent my time there sorting food that had come in through donations and food drives.  It’s all sorted by type and boxed up to go out to the food cupboards.  It was nice to be able to help out and equally nice that this service is available to those in need.  I just hope people don’t abuse it even though I’m sure some people do.
