Wed, 25 Aug 2010 23:30:16 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.0.1 Network cable anyone? http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2010/06/23/network-cable-anyone/ http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2010/06/23/network-cable-anyone/#comments Thu, 24 Jun 2010 00:37:54 +0000 Jono Cono http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/?p=889 One of my clients called me up one day and advised me they needed the network cable running out of the wall to their PC fixed.  Not really a big deal since all that would be required is a little crimping and they’d be all set.  I had to keep myself from laughing when I showed up and saw the carnage.  What happened is that instead of having the cable that ran through the wall terminiated and installing a wall jack it was running freely out of the wall to their PC and they would run over the cable with their chair to the point where it got damaged enough it stopped working.  The floor was covered in little bits of wire and cable shielding not to mention a fair amount of electrical tape.  At first glance I couldn’t fathom what exactly had happened until I clued in and realized they had tried splicing all the wires together to make it work again.  This is what one of the ends of the CAT5 looked like.

It was a valient effort no doubt but the results were a bit lacking.  I proceeded to crimp off that end and use a coupler to route a patch cable along the baseboard to avoid repeat disaster.  I did in the end poke a little fun at my client, it was kind of hard not to.

Today that customer came back with their RAM (which was fine) and a piece of paper with their lsass.exe error written on it.  They accused me of selling them RAM with a virus on it…LOL.  Even better is they conferred with some of their friends that are computer savvy and this is how they know they have a virus.  Okay, granted they probably do have a virus on their machine which has nothing to do at all with the memory they bought.  So I tell the customer it’s absolutely impossible that there was a virus on the RAM.  At this point the customer tells me I’m full of shit (ROFL) and demands their money back and to speak with the store manager.

Just for the record RAM is volatile memory meaning that as soon as the computer is turned off anything in memory is gone.  Without any power NOTHING can be stored in RAM.  It is physically impossible to sell someone a stick of RAM with a virus in it.  Obviously imbeciles are capable of convincing themselves of anything.

Needless to say my Manager explained to the customer the exact same thing.  The customer remained relentless in their vast ignorance and continued to state that I was full of shit.  What an F’n retard, people that stupid shouldn’t be allowed to use computers.  We just gave the guy a full refund with him saying we’d never see his face again (uh, awesome!).

We decided to cut across the grass instead of taking the pathway and were about halfway to the parking lot when something unexpected happened. A lot of the Canadian Geese have been frequenting our place of work, hanging out, eating etc. Well one goose in particular decided they didn’t like us cutting across the grass and decided to defend their territory. The goose started out by just honking and walking behind us so we didn’t think much of it. That quickly progressed to it running behind us and honking followed by taking flight and diving for our heads. Needless to say we high tailed it out of there, running the rest of the way. It’s not a bad way to build up an appetite for lunch but definitely not what we had planned on!

The mother walked into the kitchen and asked the seven year old what he wanted for breakfast. “Aw hell, Mom, I guess I’ll have some Cheerios.” WHACK! He flew out of his chair, tumbled across the floor, got up and ran upstairs crying his eyes out. The mother looked at the four year old and asked with a stern voice, “And what do you want for breakfast, young man?” “I don’t know,” he blubbered, “but you can bet your ass it won’t be Cheerios.”
