Wed, 25 Aug 2010 23:30:16 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.0.1 I feel like I could snap http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2008/02/25/i-feel-like-i-could-snap/ http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2008/02/25/i-feel-like-i-could-snap/#comments Mon, 25 Feb 2008 17:53:15 +0000 Jono Cono http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2008/02/25/i-feel-like-i-could-snap/ I feel like I could snap right about now.  Work has gotten progressively worse over the past couple of months.  Changes have and are being made that just about ruin what was good about my job.  I used to love my job and I’m sure this is a typical story.  You start a new job and you love it.  Everything is different, you’re learning things and getting lots of training.  You get promotions and increased pay and all that jazz.  And then after a couple of years things just get boring, it’s the same old crap and you realize that there’s nowhere left to go except out the door.  I’m coming up on that pretty soon I think.  It’s time for a change.

After a while it doesn’t matter how much money you’re making or all the perks and benefits you’re getting.  If you’re not having fun and enjoying your job on a day to day basis then it’s over.  Time to start something new.

]]> http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2008/02/25/i-feel-like-i-could-snap/feed/ 0 Hardware warranty anyone? http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/04/06/hardware-warranty-anyone/ http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/04/06/hardware-warranty-anyone/#comments Sat, 07 Apr 2007 03:30:56 +0000 Jono Cono http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/04/06/hardware-warranty-anyone/ I’ve found that working with computers and by default people there are generally three categories that people fall into when it comes to warranties and their computers.  The first type is those who regard a warranty as the end all be all for everything and anything that could go wrong regardless of what their hardware may or may not actually be doing.  Problems with Outlook email, that’s obviously a hardware issue, need to update your IDE controllers, not a hardware warranty issue.  Oh you can’t open up an Adobe acrobat attachment in your webmail cause you don’t have the latest version of Adobe Reader?  That is definitely not a hardware warranty issue people!

Then you have the second type of people who don’t just want a solution for things that go wrong regardless if the culprit is hardware or software they just want something replaced.  Why flash the BIOS when you can replace the motherboard, why bother and format the hard drive and reinstall for a read error when you can just replace the hard drive.  These people don’t want to know the cause of the issue and don’t want to take any steps to fix it, just replace something already.  These type of people can be very condescending and are absolutely certain that you don’t know anything at all and are completely wasting their time.  These people are the worst to deal with, much like an unruly spoiled brat.

The third category of people are my favourite and the most enjoyable to work with.  These people regard a hardware warranty as it was meant to be.  A hardware component fails and can be proven to be faulty then you’re all set.  These people fully appreciate your knowledge and expertise in technology.  They love that you spend the time to take all the necessary steps to work on their computer and get it back up and running tip top.

In everything you do you always have to take the good with the bad.  The good helps make the bad more bearable but believe me there’s a lot of people out there that need to get their heads straightened out!

]]> http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/04/06/hardware-warranty-anyone/feed/ 0 Beyond my expectations http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/03/14/beyond-my-expectations/ http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/03/14/beyond-my-expectations/#comments Thu, 15 Mar 2007 03:44:29 +0000 Jono Cono http://www.jonocono.ca/ramblings/2007/03/14/beyond-my-expectations/ Well today was quite the day it was rainy and overcast with a thick fog starting in the early afternoon.  I believe that was on account of both the rain and warm temperatures causing all the snow and ice to thaw.  But it just wasn’t just raining outside it was also raining inside…money that is.  As soon as I got to work today my manager scheduled a meeting with me and I had my review and we then discussed my pay raise and bonus.  Wow, it went beyond anything I was expecting and I’m quite amazed!  That’s by far the best pay raise and bonus I think I’ve gotten in my life so far, hope the trend continues.

On another note this evening I went to Loblaws Superstore down in Westboro to pick up a few groceries.  While I was there I decided to finally redeem some of my hundreds of thousands of PC points.  They’ve been collecting for a while and I hadn’t really thought about using any of them until I became in need of a new rice pot.  The rice pot I’ve had for many years has finally reached the end of it’s useful life.  I saw at Loblaws a few weeks ago a really nice large rice pot/steamer.  It’s shiny silver on the outside with a digital blue back lit display.  A non stick rice bowl, steaming tray, and serving spatula is included.

As far as prices go this one was pretty standard for a rice pot that fancy, about $50.00.  I’m quite happy with the first purchase I’ve made with my PC points and I’m sure I’ll enjoy for years to come.  I do love my rice, in fact I love PC points!  They are so easy to accumulate and well worth your while when you consider all the things you can get for free with them.  I think I’ve had my air miles card for eleven years now and may possibly have enough points to get free movie tickets.  How sad is that?  Yah PC points, boo air miles!

This week I started working from home and happily so. It’s been a long time since I worked at home, around four years. I had always enjoyed it even though I do enjoy the company of others. What I’m going to be doing now won’t be so bad as I’ll still go into the office for a week here and there.

It’s so amazing being able to work from home and not having to commute or waste all that money and time. There’s no forgetting to bring a lunch or worse your wallet. There’s no getting stuck behind crap loads of idiotic Ottawa/Quebec drivers who mistake the highway for a secondary road. The days fly by without constant distractions and it’s so peaceful, just me and the Chitty. I’m going to savour every minute of working from home.

I have to say my employer is quite generous, they even went so far as to buy me slippers for working at home. It makes me laugh but they’re great, I’m actually wearing them right now!

That’s the problem with switching shifts back to back, at the beginning you get five days off and when you switch back, only one day off in seven. Overall it’s not that bad though, I still enjoy only working four days a week. That one full extra day off is so much better than having a couple extra free hours each day.

Basically the way we request and get vacation or time off approved is all automated. It’s all based on dates and hours allocated and once those are used up you’re SOL. I of course wanting to go away for Christmas had attempted getting a block of time off and was only able to get about half of what I wanted confirmed. That was going to help me any so I decided to escalate it to my Manager who in turn had to push it up to his Manager to get me approval for the time off. Everyone worked together splendidly and I am finally approved! It’s always nice to see management come through for you. I’m really luck when it comes to my Manager, he’s a great guy and I work for a great company, that makes a world of difference!

Then there is always the option of doing it yourself, armed with the right knowledge and the fact that you probably trust your own self, DIY home repairs are a good way of getting the job done! Whether you’re looking at doing a little remodeling or going for the complete home makeover, it all lies within the realm of possibility. I’ve worked on many a home repair job doing it myself from shingling roofs, building decks, painting, refinishing, and a little plumbing. Even when it comes to smaller auto jobs I do it myself. Once you know how to do something it’s never as difficult as it once may have seemed.

Tonight it’s early to bed for a nice long sleep, oh yeah!
