We went shopping at Homesense yesterday for the first time as we received some gift certificates as wedding gifts. We nabbed some good deals and got the following.

A set of 3 non stick different sized woks, small, medium and large.
2 frying pans.
Bamboo paper towel stand.
Cusinart silicone spatula
15 pack of non slip hangers
Stovetop spoon rest
Set of 4 dipping dishes
14 inch pizza pan
Non stick Baking pan
Kitchen Aid meat thermometer

Suprisingly we were able to get all that at just under $100.

Earwigs in full effect

Earwigs are in full effect this summer and are annoyingly making their way inside. We never had a problem with Earwigs in previous years but I think the potted plants our neighbours put outside close to our front door are attracting them. Almost every night I can walk over to the front door and catch a half dozen or more crawling around. The occasional one finds it’s way upstairs but it’s rare thankfully.

I did some reading on creating traps for Earwigs and how to get rid of them. One of the methods was putting out a low can/container of vegatable oil and apparently they’ll crawl in and die. I’m not sure why Earwigs are attracted to oil but we unwittingly found out it works well.

We had cleaned out the grease catcher on our BBQ and forgot the can outside for about a week. When I went to pick it up it was full of dead Earwigs and pretty gross looking. I think I’m going to put a can with vegtable oil outside by the front door and hopefully trap all the Earwigs before they make their way inside.

Leaky toilet

The leaky toilet has finally been fixed. For months now one of the toilets upstairs has been leaking, enough so that you could hear it at night or whenever you were in the bathroom. The weird thing was that originally I couldn’t figure out where the noise was coming from. The whole leaky toilet started pretty subtly, sometimes you could hear it, sometimes not. Over time it became much more noticeable to the point where I took the tank cover off, put some pressure on the flapper and sure enough the noise stopped. I think the rubber had started to deteriorate and was preventing a tight seal.

A quick trip to Canadian tire solved that issue. A replacement rubber flapper is really cheap at $4. It only took a couple minutes to replace it although the adjustment of the chain took some flushing and fiddling around with to get it right. Works wonderfully now and no more annoying leaky sounds, just silence!

A great weekend

I had a great weekend and helped my brother move on Saturday. It was raining, although with more of a constant drizzle it was almost refreshing. When we were headed back over to my place I drove past the tennis courts, I noticed with glee that the nets were back up. I didn’t get to go play on Saturday due to the weather but I sure went yesterday. Sunday was so nice and sunny and warm, the day turned out beautifully after starting out wet and grey. I played an hour of tennis with Mary Beth, then went for a walk and played another hour of tennis with my brother followed by tossing the football around.

It was rather interesting when I went back to the tennis courts with my brother as there appeared to be a block party happening on the tennis courts. There were 40′s strewn all over one side of the court with about 12 people drinking and having a friendly little tennis match. They weren’t causing any trouble but I thought it odd that they were drinking so openly on city property without any regard.

Last night we had the first bbq of the season, it’s so great to be doing that again. Nothing beats the bar-b!

Command and Conquer

Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars has commanded my attention and conquered much of my free time lately. It’s highly addictive and is leaving me playing for hours on end sitting in front of my computer. There’s a good reason why children shouldn’t be allowed to play too many video games. I suppose one of the reasons for high obesity among the young ones in Canada these days. Command and Conquer is definitely a lot of fun and gets much more challenging as you go along. You really have to think out your strategy because if you just wing it you’re done! I think that’s what makes it so addictive is the challenge and then finding out what the next challenge is going to be.

I don’t play computer games much especially big ones like Command and Conquer and I think it’s a good thing I don’t or otherwise I’d never get anything done. Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars works great running on Windows Vista Ultimate. The graphics are really good and game play is smooth, I’ve even been able to burn dvds and having other programs running while playing without having the game hang on me. Time well wasted I suppose!

Under the weather

I can’t stand that we’re having Winter all over again. It bothers me that I’m so bothered about it that I feel the need to write about it as well. Today I stayed at home feeling somewhat worn out. I’m getting lots of rest and staying out of this nasty weather. I just didn’t have the capacity to drag myself to work today whatsoever. I think my brain needs a break more than anything. We’ll just say today’s a brain break!

Stagg Chili got bite

Stagg Chili has bite that’s for sure but not the kind of bite you might expect. It’s certainly not spicy although it’s flavour is decent as far as canned food goes. Ah, no the type of bite Stagg Chili had was the nasty kind as in bite your finger off. Poor Mary Beth (my girlfriend) went to open up a can of Stagg Chili this evening with it’s pop-top lid and gashed her finger open pretty badly. I believe it was because the lid got stuck, I’ve never trusted anything that had to do with either peeling or popping off pieces of metal. I’ll definitely be wary of Stagg Chili cans from now on. Anyhow the damage was bad enough to warrant stopping on the way home from work to pick up some good bandages to stop the bleeding. I checked out the gash when I got home and it’s pretty gross looking, not the type of thing you’d expect from a can of Stagg Chili, but hey anything can happen!

Groundhog suicidal

A friend and myself were standing out in front of work the other day by the visitors entrance. The driveway is circular in fashion so people can be dropped off and cars can just keep driving around to get out. While we were standing there a car was making it’s way to the entrance when a groundhog bolted for it and started running across the driveway. They weren’t only running across the driveway but running in a diagonal fashion towards the moving car. I’ve always wondered why you see so many of these as roadkill, they’re not the fastest animals but they’re not the slowest either.

This little guy was running straight for the front left wheel of the moving car so we motioned for the driver to stop. We didn’t really want roadkill sitting in our driveway at work, eventually the groundhog moved off but really, what were they thinking.

Warned by police | No shortcuts

Last night after work I went to meet a friend for a drink and some chit chat. By the time I headed home it was starting to get a bit late and the streets were quiet. I live on a one way street which is of course quite common in Ottawa as that makes up the majority of streets here. Where my house is actually situated on the street is close to one corner where I actually have to drive by and around the block and back down my street to pull into my driveway. On occasion I forgo the whole drive around the block deal and just turn the wrong way down my street if there’s no cars and pull into my driveway. A shortcut yes, but a fine worthy shortcut at that.

It just happened to be my luck last night that when I did that there was a cop at the other end of my street who saw me do that. By the time I got out of my car they were parked behind me with their window rolled down. It was a good thing this police officer wasn’t too petty. They asked me if I knew what I just did was $110 fine and I said no. Then then asked me if I lived there and I said yes, and then they said “so this probably isn’t the first time you’ve done this”. I didn’t see any point in lying so I said I did it on occasion. They just finished things up by saying I shouldn’t be taking shortcuts and to be aware it could cost me and that was it. Guess I’ll be driving around the block more often!

Winter revisited

Well I thought all the rain might have been enough this week as far as crappy weather goes. This morning I got a surprise when I looked out the window and saw that it had snowed last night. It’s cold today but there is a little sunshine and that’s something to be thankful for. I really don’t want anymore snow or cold, just sunshine and warmth. Winter is supposed to be over already!
