Photo work has begun

I have finally begun working on integrating my photos into my blog instead of having them separate. In reality I’m just moving them up a level. My idea is to have a page with some information and links to various photo albums that will open in a new window or tab. The only reason I don’t want the actual photo albums to display inline on my blog is because of reduced viewing space. Using Flash I can have the photos scale to fit the size of the visitor’s browser window and therefore maximize the viewing experience for those with larger monitors.

I think this is going to work pretty well and because it’s Flash I won’t have to worry about people hot linking my photos either. I’ll let you know when it’s all done!

Time for a photoblog?

I haven’t done anything with my photos lately and have tons more that I’d like to put up on my website. The only problem is that I don’t know how I want to display them yet. I’m also not sure if I want to allow comments or just have it set up for viewing only. I’ve been toying with different possibilities and various ways of setting it up. I always keep coming back to Flash for a few different reasons. With more and more large monitors out there it’s very important to have fluid webpages, that can be a little tricky with photos. With Flash however I could have a photo fill a 24 inch widescreen monitor and still display perfectly on a 15 inch flat panel. Without using Flash either end of the extreme would have either a lot of scrolling to do or a lot of empty space surrounding the photo. This is probably going to be my next project, I’m sure I’ll come up with something.

Last night’s fireworks

The fireworks last night started around 10:00 p.m. and we headed down to the river around 9:30 p.m. Any place down by the river either on the Ottawa side or Quebec side is great for watching the fireworks. We were trying to get down to the river pathway in behind of Parliament Hill only to find out they had it blocked off and police were guarding entrances down to the pathway. I’m not too sure why as in previous years we were always allowed down to the pathways by the river to watch fireworks on Canada Day. I couldn’t find any information that explained why either. Maybe some drunk idiot fell in the river last year or they’re more paranoid about security now.

The fireworks were awesome and I was able to snap off a couple shots before it started raining and I had to put the camera away. Once the fireworks were over and the mass exodus of people flowed back to the streets everyone was in good spirits and we all started singing ‘O Canada’. I don’t think anyone was actually on key, although being in a huge crowd that spontaneously starts singing our national anthem is a lot of fun!

Canada Day Photos

I took a little saunter downtown to see what was happening and join in some Canada Day festivities. I biked down and then walked around to see everything and biked home, so much easier then trying to take the bus today.

I started out at Parliament hill and hung around there for a while. There was some music happening and lots of people hanging about, here’s some photos from around the hill.

Farmers, in a sort of passive protest had tractors parked along the

sidewalk in front of Parliament hill, here’s a shot of one of them.

Support our Canadian farmers, they need us and we need them!

After hanging around the hill I headed down to Major’s hill park, it was a bit of a slow walk with the crowd. It was around two o’clock and there was supposed to have been a comedic high dive show starting. Seems like the schedule changed as they were nowhere to be found.

Here’s a shot of a beautiful married couple basking in each other’s

company beside the locks along the canal. They look very in love

and it was quite striking…an island unto themselves in a sea of people.

This couple was literally only yards away from thousands of people.

You wouldn’t know it to look at the picture!

While in Major’s hill park I watched some Native Indian dancers perform.
They were wonderful to watch and I love the elaborate detail and colours
of their traditional dress.

So after the hill I headed back to the street and hung out in front
of the Chateau Laurier for a while, listening to music, watching buskers
and just people in general, here’s a few shots from that vantage point.

Now we’ll have to wait and see how the fireworks turn out! Better not rain!

Photo printing

I have recently been doing more photo printing at home with the most recent project using 8.5 by 11 photo paper size. The prints are coming out beautifully and I love the convenience and flexibility of being able to do such things at home. I have control over every aspect and detail of the entire process.

Being curious I did the math to compare how much it costs me to print out a high resolution 8.5 x 11 print on high gloss Kodak Ultima paper (great quality). The cost of the sheet plus the cost of ink used to generate the image costs me only eighty cents. I looked around at different places that offer photo lab services, both large and small businesses and found that the same project would have cost me $5.99 for one print…WOW! That’s a heck of a lot of money for one photo that potentially may not even turn out that well. I think I’ll just stick to doing them at home.

Picture perfect

Macro photography

Today was a glorious day of which I spent almost four hours in nature taking a lot of closeup photos. It’s not something I get to do that often so I enjoyed it immensely. I experimented quite a bit, some photos were hard to get perfect while others were easy. Once I get home tomorrow I’m going to put them all up online. There’s a very rewarding feeling that comes with capturing something so small and yet so beautiful in great detail!

Living on the edge

It’s an unusual theme for a set of photos but I couldn’t resist and I find it very amusing. It seems to be such a precarious location to take care of bodily functions. It brings a whole new meaning to ‘Living on the edge’. These photos focus on the portable toilets located on the top floors of these construction sites.

I cannot scream :(( loud enough for all the world to hear, but how I wish I could.

Okay, thanks for listening that was my shortest rant ever. Since Monday was actually a good day I suppose Tuesday had to have it’s shortcomings. My mental acuity is lacking today, my creativity squashed, therefore I have nothing more to say, save this:

I have uploaded a new photo album named ‘Toads, fish, bridges and me in a tree’, which you can view from this page. I also changed the format of my photo albums so it’s now done in Flash. I like the layout a lot better and it’s less work for me as well. Now that I’ve sorted out a better way, a lot more photo’s are on the way. Enjoy!
