• Ending a phone call via Bluetooth headset doesn’t close the phone app.  Unlocking to the home screen will show the phone app still open and tapping the End button does not close it.  Must press the home screen button to close.
• Push for email doesn’t work when WiFi is enabled, only works when using carrier data.
• Emails via Exchange account don’t sync in terms of what’s been read.  Previously if I read the email first on my iPhone it would show as read in Outlook or vice versa…no longer.
• Whatsapp app takes 10 seconds to load which is extremely annoying.
• Photos and video will freeze and tapping the screen does nothing.
• Tethering via Bluetooth is choppy although tethering via the USB cable still works normally.
• Timer randomly works.
• Certain applications that worked fine before will randomly close while in use.
• Email audio notifications are delayed quite a bit.

The first time I ever copied a video I had made from my iPhone to my computer and played it I was dismayed that it was sideways.  Obviously that wasn’t going to work and so the search for some software commenced.  After a fair bit of searching I came across X2X free video flip and rotate software which works wonderfully.  It’s a lightweight program under 4MB and gets the job done super fast.   The program rotates your video and saves to mp4 format.  There is no noticeable loss in quality for both audio and video.  Even if you don’t need to rotate video but need mp4 format you can keep the setting at “normal display” and just convert your file.  I use X2X in Windows 7 to rotate iPhone videos.

This can be a real problem when the account being used was the sysadmin account as now it appears you’re completely stuck.  Simply Accounting at this point has a “Phantom User” logged in with no apparent way of forcing a reset.  It’s been noted that in previous versions of Simply Accounting you could log in under “single user mode” and this would essentially log out the “Phantom User”.  In Simply Accounting 2010 if you’re experiencing this issue it won’t allow you to log in under “single user mode” either.
Thankfully there’s a real quick fix for this if you’re running the Simply Accounting Connection Manager on your server.  Log into the server and open Task Manager, locate the process “mysqld-nt.exe” and terminate it.  Once that is done you can log back into Simply Accounting from the workstation normally.

I already had Spyware Doctor with Antivirus running on my system when I decided to try Avira Premium Security Suite.  I’m a big fan of Avira and with good reason.  Time and again Avira has proven an exceptional product both in detection and cleaning as well as prevention.  I say this with much experience in professional virus/malware/rootkit removal and cleaning of systems.

Unfortunately the combination of Avira Premium Security Suite and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus ended in a lot of system freezing and Avira would lock up entirely while running a full system scan.  I noticed that while browsing the web in Firefox it would freeze and respond intermittently.  Running a full scan with Avira would result in the program freezing in a random spot and locking up entirely.  It was impossible to even kill the process manually.  It would require shutting down the system and rebooting.

It’s kind of too bad as I like both programs but there are lot’s of other combinations of Anti-Virus programs out there that work quite well in tandem.  One of those combinations is Avira along with Microsoft Security Essentials.

I found a Russian piece of software that performed a certain task that I required completing quite often on a daily basis.  The program works great but there were certain things that bugged me and needed to be corrected.  This wasn’t my first time hacking code but it was the first time hacking software.  It went quite well and I’m satisfied with the results, also learned a few things along the way.

Part of what I do professionally is clean systems entirely of malware, viruses, trojans, rootkits and all that bad stuff.  I had a laptop come in today that was nicely infected.  The laptop was full of rogues, trojans, backdoors, fakealerts, ms antivirus 2009, fake AVG resident among other things.  The first program I ran found 23 items and the second program found 37 items while VIPRE found nothing.  Even the active protection in VIPRE did nothing to prevent all the pop-ups and fake alerts that were bombarding the system.  The whole time I was scanning with VIPRE it was like not even having an Antivirus program.  Each program scan was done with latest updates and without removing anything from the system to make it fair.

I was able to run 3 full complete system scans with other programs in the amount of time it took VIPRE to run one scan.  Running VIPRE on your system will not keep you protected, guaranteed.  But then again, running any single Antivirus program no matter which one it is will not keep your system completely protected.  This is a fact that most people find surprising for some reason.  It always makes me chuckle when people act shocked that I just cleaned 700 viruses off their system when they had Norton 360 installed and running with latest updates.  Or having removed 200 viruses off a system running Nod 32 with latest updates that would scan clean.

I know ways to keep your system completely protected and clean but I’m not telling cause Virus/Malware removal is good money ;-)

Now I had to find out what on earth was using up so much space. As it turns out my default email account which I never use was the victim of email spoofing. There were over 70,000 daemon failure messages amongst other spammy emails.

I promptly notified tech support and within minutes they had something setup to prevent any of those mails from getting into my account. I finally managed to delete all of those emails and was able to update to the latest release of WordPress this morning.

If you ever get a random blue screen error or BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) as they’re also commonly called and the stop error code is: 0x000000D1 then go ahead and make the call, it’s your lucky day!  Along with the stop error code you can also get the message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.  That particular message can be a pain, I’ve seen that message displayed for quite a variety of issues from faulty RAM to faulty DIMM slots on a motherboard, to a bad paging file, to a wireless card causing problems.

Dell said on its website Thursday it will once again let consumers choose between Windows XP and Windows Vista when they purchase certain models of new machines.  Dell, along with other computer manufacturers stopped offering XP not long after Windows Vista was launched at the end of January.  I believe the only models that continued to have XP as an option were those targeted to meet business and large company needs.

It seems a little odd that consumers wouldn’t be more interested in the latest and greatest which Vista is supposed to be and I surely think it is.  But there’s always the plain and simple fact that Windows XP is a lot more familiar to people and all their favourite programs and software work well with it.  I know from experience there are still lots of issues with software and driver compatibility and sometimes just a sheer lack of drivers when it comes to Vista.  This is all part of the process while Vista matures as an operating system and developers play catch-up releasing new software, updates and drivers as time goes on!
