As per the manufacturer Windows 7 is supported. The NTI WF-2109 ships with a drivers CD but you’ll find that if you’re running Windows 7 attempting to install the driver via the CD will error out and advise you that the operating system is not supported. Windows 7 does not have a built in plug and play driver for the NTI WF-2109. What you’ll need to do is make sure that you have a hard wired connection or otherwise bridge a wireless connection from a laptop so that Windows can download and install the driver. The NTI WF-2109 actually shows up in the Device Manager as a Realtek RTL8190 802.11n Wireless LAN (Mini-) PCI NIC.

• Ending a phone call via Bluetooth headset doesn’t close the phone app.  Unlocking to the home screen will show the phone app still open and tapping the End button does not close it.  Must press the home screen button to close.
• Push for email doesn’t work when WiFi is enabled, only works when using carrier data.
• Emails via Exchange account don’t sync in terms of what’s been read.  Previously if I read the email first on my iPhone it would show as read in Outlook or vice versa…no longer.
• Whatsapp app takes 10 seconds to load which is extremely annoying.
• Photos and video will freeze and tapping the screen does nothing.
• Tethering via Bluetooth is choppy although tethering via the USB cable still works normally.
• Timer randomly works.
• Certain applications that worked fine before will randomly close while in use.
• Email audio notifications are delayed quite a bit.

The most messed up piece of network cable I've seen.

It was a valient effort no doubt but the results were a bit lacking.  I proceeded to crimp off that end and use a coupler to route a patch cable along the baseboard to avoid repeat disaster.  I did in the end poke a little fun at my client, it was kind of hard not to.

The features for the NTI-2406 include:

The NTI-2406 comes packaged with power adapter, 2 dipole antennas, quick install guide and a CD with user manual and drivers.  On the top of the NTI-2406 are LED indicators for: PWR, WPS, SYS, WLAN, WAN, LAN.  The web browser configuration utility on the NTI-2406 is very clean, easy to use and well laid out,  easy to setup port forwarding, IP filtering, DDNS and routing table configuration..  The default IP address is: 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 with the DHCP server enabled by default.  To set up the router you’ll need to make sure that your PC is set to obtain an IP automatically.  The default username and password for the NTI-2406 are both “guest”.

The range of the wireless signal on G is decent inside the house and unfortunately I don’t have any N wireless devices but I’m sure that the signal would be even better using N.   On my old wireless G router I had a 7dBi antenna attached for greater range.  That type of antenna isn’t compatible with an N wireless router but once I upgrade to N wireless devices I can appreciate the greater range of N. You can also set the NTI-2406 to transmit the radio signal of your choice or a combination thereof.

There are also parental controls you can use to supervise internet activity.  These controls aren’t just limited to parental use obviously and are handy for use in small businesses.  The term “supervise internet activity” makes it sound like you can view logs or otherwise know what someone has been doing which is not so.  What you can actually do is take advantage of 3 different firewalls, MAC, IP and DNS.  You can set days of week and time to allow or deny access to the internet.  If you use the IP firewall it would be best to set a DHCP reservation for the system first.  Using the DNS filter (firewall) you can block access to websites by keywords.  Again, you can set time of day, all day, days of week, allow or deny.

So far I’m happy with this purchase of the NTI-2406 and it’s working great.  I’m also impressed with the amount of features that are included and the level of configuration available.

This can be a real problem when the account being used was the sysadmin account as now it appears you’re completely stuck.  Simply Accounting at this point has a “Phantom User” logged in with no apparent way of forcing a reset.  It’s been noted that in previous versions of Simply Accounting you could log in under “single user mode” and this would essentially log out the “Phantom User”.  In Simply Accounting 2010 if you’re experiencing this issue it won’t allow you to log in under “single user mode” either.
Thankfully there’s a real quick fix for this if you’re running the Simply Accounting Connection Manager on your server.  Log into the server and open Task Manager, locate the process “mysqld-nt.exe” and terminate it.  Once that is done you can log back into Simply Accounting from the workstation normally.

I tried a few things before quickly realizing that I could end up spending hours trying to get the calendar syncing.  Thankfully BES technical support is really good and BES Express does come with one free support call.  You can register online for the free support call or just provide the SRP id when you call in and they’ll get you straight through to a technician.

It turned out the big thing preventing the calendar from syncing was permissions on the public folder.  The BESAdmin account is a basic service account and can’t be a member of too many groups.  By going into Active Directory and viewing properties of the BESAdmin account the “member of” tab listed almost 12 groups that the BESAdmin account was a member of.  One of these groups was the Domain Admin group which will totally kill Calendar syncing due to permissions.  I removed all the extra groups leaving only 4 basic ones.

The next step is resetting the cache so that the settings you just changed can go into effect immediately.  Permissions are cached for about 2 hours.  A work around for this is be going into services and restarting the Microsoft Exchange information store.  Once I had done that I checked the Blackberry and the calendar immediately started populating with all events.  Calendar objects from the Blackberry were also syncing into Exchange and displaying in Outlook.

If you ever run into an issue with BES Express not syncing the calendar to your Blackberry you can implement this resolution and fix the problem in less then 5 minutes.

I did try putting the TL-WN353GD back into the system after Windows was installed.  Windows 7 did pick up the device but was unable to install any driver for it.  I went to TP Link support and they don’t have a Windows 7 driver available.  When trying to install the Vista driver it comes up with an error stating “This Operating System is not Supported”.  So I returned this wireless card and picked up a D-Link Rangebooster one for the same price which works awesome.

I already had Spyware Doctor with Antivirus running on my system when I decided to try Avira Premium Security Suite.  I’m a big fan of Avira and with good reason.  Time and again Avira has proven an exceptional product both in detection and cleaning as well as prevention.  I say this with much experience in professional virus/malware/rootkit removal and cleaning of systems.

Unfortunately the combination of Avira Premium Security Suite and Spyware Doctor with Antivirus ended in a lot of system freezing and Avira would lock up entirely while running a full system scan.  I noticed that while browsing the web in Firefox it would freeze and respond intermittently.  Running a full scan with Avira would result in the program freezing in a random spot and locking up entirely.  It was impossible to even kill the process manually.  It would require shutting down the system and rebooting.

It’s kind of too bad as I like both programs but there are lot’s of other combinations of Anti-Virus programs out there that work quite well in tandem.  One of those combinations is Avira along with Microsoft Security Essentials.
